Spruce Up a Room Without Paint
Posted on July 26, 2010 · Leave a CommentAs a renter there are things we don’t do, such as paint. However, there are plenty of ways to add color and life to your walls without paint. Honestly, painting takes a lot of time, effort and even a little skill if you want it to come out looking good!
Try out one of the simple alternatives to sprucing up the walls of your apartment:
Vinyl Wall Decals have been around for a while now and they have been branded a little kitschy. However, they have all kinds of new options and designs which allow you to put your personality on the walls, with no long term consequences!
Fabric can be hung on a wall to add texture and color to a room. Just head over to one of the craft stores in Lubbock and find some inexpensive fabric you like. It can be hung with 3M Command Strips and is a super simple way to add color to a room.
A tall bookcase is another great way to add color and dimension to a room. Use tall furniture to occupy a bare wall and fill it with photos, colorful decor pieces and books for a very personalized feel.
How have you personalized your apartment here at Canyon Crossing?

Sneaky Ways to Fit in Fitness
Posted on July 9, 2010 · Leave a CommentI don’t know about you, but I generally fee like there simply aren’t enough hours in the day. Between work and home and cooking I often find a pretty good excuse to skip the gym. However, I’m working on finding time for those work outs now. I have been pretty good about making it to the Canyon Crossing fitness center at least twice a week. I’ve also been sneaking in extra exercises here and there. I think they might actually be working too!
Here are my favorite ways to sneak a little extra exercise into my day:
- I do squats while I brush my teeth. Sounds funny I know, but it’s a simple exercise that you can do while your hands are occupied.
- Anytime I walk up stairs I do a few calf raises on the last step. Now to be honest I only do that if I’m alone. I feel a little silly doing it in front of people!
- While I’m cooking I’ll do a few counter-top pushups while things simmer or bake. Pushup’s are a great exercise, but I don’t want to put my hands on the floor while I’m cooking!
There are just my funny ways of fitting in some exercises to my hectic life. How do you fit it into your life?
Ready to Head to the Skies?
Posted on July 7, 2010 · Leave a CommentI’m leaving on a jet plane, don’t know when I’ll be back again. Ok, well actually I know exactly when I’ll be back but I just couldn’t resist! I fly out soon and am stressing over trying to cram all my stuff into a carry-on, since just about every airline in the world now charges for a checked bag. The swift evaporation of perks for economy-fliers is exasperating to say the least.
However, in my search for a flight I discovered that not all the perks are gone! Some airlines still offer little pleasantries for someone other then business class. While I’m always a little sad to leave Texas, it’s much more fun when I enjoy my flight. Here are the perks and the airlines who offer them:
JetBlue has a number of great perks for every flier. The 1st checked bag is still free. They have free Dunkin’ Donuts coffee for morning flights. They still have free in-flight snacks, seriously! They offer both XM radio and individual tv’s for every guest. Plus they have some great deals on flights.
Continental Airlines still offers food and beverage service on any flight over 2 hours. So sit back and enjoy that snack or meal on your next flight!
American Airlines and Delta both offer in-flight internet, for a small fee. So you can now enjoy surfing and working while on the plane.
Woman’s Day has a great article list other great airline perks. With which airline do you usually fly?
Bring that Cookout Inside
Posted on July 2, 2010 · Leave a CommentDon’t let the rain dampen your Independence Day fun! Just bring that cookout indoors to stay dry. While you can’t exactly grill or lay-out indoors, that weather is no reason to cancel your plans. All it takes is a little ingenuity to create a great 4th of July party in your home.
Here are a few things that might help:
- Get a grill pan, so you can still enjoy “grilled” food, even if it’s raining outside! I would suggest a simple cast iron pan.
- Grab some cards or a board game so you and your guest can play the day away! My personal favorites are Uno and Apples to Apples.
- Create a few patriotic decorations to get your apartment in the holiday spirit!
- Whip up one of these decadent red, white and blue desserts to keep everyone feeling sweet.
- Finally, put on some festive and summery tunes to enjoy! Turn on one of the fireworks shows being broadcast and enjoy some fireworks from the comfort of your couch.
What is your favorite way to celebrate the 4th?

4th of July Celebrations
Posted on June 30, 2010 · Leave a CommentThe fourth of July is a wonderful celebration of our country’s heritage and the assertion of our independence. Fireworks have been a traditional form of celebration since the earliest days. One we continue today. Honestly, I think fireworks may be one of my favorite holiday traditions. They always take me back to childhood.
There are plenty of events this weekend to celebrate the Fourth of July:
Buffalo Springs Lake Fireworks show is on Saturday, July 3rd. They will have live music at 6:00 pm and the fireworks will start about 9:30 pm. There will also be a parade at 2:00 pm. Admission is $6 for adults and $3 for children.
Slaton Independence Day Festival is Saturday, July 3rd, from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm. There will be live music, food and games at this free event.
4th on Broadway Celebration in downtown Lubbock is a free two-day festival taking place on Saturday, July 3rd, and Sunday, July 4th. The fireworks will be on Sunday, July 4th, around nightfall.
Everyone celebrate Independence day in their own way. How do you typically celebrate?
Now This is Summer!
Posted on June 25, 2010 · Leave a CommentDespite the heat, summer time just makes me want to get outside. I love little more then a picnic in the park on a summer evening. What to picnic and enjoy some live entertainment at the same time?
Take in a play at Founders park this weekend! Lubbock HUB Performing Arts School presents “Jungle Book” this Friday, June 25th at 8:00 pm, and Saturday, June 26th at 10:00 am. This is a free event and open to the public.
So pack up a picnic, grab some chairs and a blanket and head over to Founders park. This should be a great event for the whole family. Just don’t forget some bug spray!
